Saint Sarkis the Warrior is one of the most beloved saints in the Armenian Christian tradition and is widely honored as a protector of faith, courage, youth, and soldiers. He lived during the 4th century and served as a high-ranking military commander in the Roman Empire under Emperor Constantine. Because of his strong Christian faith, he later faced persecution when anti-Christian rulers came to power.
According to Armenian tradition, Saint Sarkis fled with his son, Mardiros, to Armenia and served in the Persian army, where he continued to preach Christianity. Eventually, both father and son were martyred for refusing to renounce their faith. Their steadfast devotion made Saint Sarkis a symbol of loyalty to Christ, bravery, and spiritual perseverance.
In the Armenian Apostolic Church, Saint Sarkis holds a special place similar to the role of saints such as Saint George in other Christian traditions. He is especially known as the patron saint of young people and those in love.
Armenian communities celebrate the Feast of Saint Sarkis each year with prayers, blessings for youth, and cultural traditions connected to hope, guidance, and faithful love.
For the Armenian community in Charlotte, naming the church after Saint Sarkis reflects values that are deeply important to the community: faithfulness, endurance through hardship, protection of family and culture, and commitment to Christian identity across generations. The name honors both Armenian spiritual heritage and the resilience of Armenians throughout history.
